The drawing commands used are closely related to those of the Graphics Device Interface (GDI) API, which is used for drawing in Microsoft Windows. EMF files were then enhanced via EMF+ files. Essentially, a metafile stores a list of records consisting of drawing commands, property definitions, and graphics objects that enable an image to be displayed on screen. WMF files were later superseded by Enhanced Metafiles (EMF files), which provided device independence. It acts in a similar manner to SVG files. The original Windows Metafile format was not device-independent, although it could be made more so with placement headers. Additionally, the format may contain both vector graphics and bitmap components. Windows Metafile (WMF) is an image file format that was originally designed for Microsoft Windows in the 1990s.
